Welcome to First Place Family Center's new blog. We are working together to evolve better ways to help homeless families. Besides the services you might expect from a Center like ours, our overarching goal is to make the Center itself a transformative environment. We are doing this by refining a set of principles based on knowledge of how people change and heal.
The purpose of this blog is to share our ongoing experience and to elicit the wisdom of the larger community in our process.

Center Director

Well, my son and I are here again. We love to be here. It is a place of listening, caring, and healing. All of us as human beings have frailties and we need each other. When we are in a situation like homelessness, illness, or unemployment, for ex., families have little else to do but spend much more time with each other. Before there sircumstances became so desperate, families could ignore on-going issues such as child discipline, lack of self-control, addictive behaviors and just plain brokenness that comes from being a human and living in this world. Each person, like me on this journey of life has issues to deal with. When we are all here together they are magnified and this is an opportunity to address them. Here a person is free to look at the truth if they choose to. I have been so blessed to be here. Sometimes people might think that I have it all together, but they are wrong and I need healing just like everyone else. I am overwhelmed daily as I see the care and compassion, the personal attnetion each family receives. For the employees here it is more than a job. They invest their lives in all of us each moment they are here. And many never really go home. They are willing to be vulnerable and open to caring for us in anyway that will help us and our children grow and heal and become better parents, better friends, better members of this of life as we engage each other. My life has been expanded and elevated to accept people and to urge them on towards the goal of knowing a loving and compassionate Creator who has shown His love through His Son, as demonstrated as My Savior ate with sinners and tax collectors.
